Women Defining History

DCHS presents its annual Women Defining History Award to a woman who exemplifies outstanding leadership and dedication to honoring and preserving our community's past, while strengthening it for generations to come.

Kristine Gerber is a journalist, author and educator dedicated to preserving and sharing Omaha's past. In 1999, while working for the Omaha World-Herald, she began uncovering the stories and photographs that define the city-doing it the best way possible: by talking directly with the everyday people who lived the history. Those interviews led to the publication of "Omaha Times Remembered" and launched a career rooted in community storytelling.

Since then, Kristine has edited and/or published more than 50 books on Omaha and Nebraska history and, through her work with what is now Preserve Omaha, helped secure National Register status for more than 100 historic properties. She brought that same passion for storytelling into the classroom through the Omaha Public Schools' Making Invisible Histories Visible program, connecting students and teachers to the people, places and stories often left out of textbooks.

She inspires pride in our shared past and serves as a model for strengthening community through education, historic preservation and volunteerism.
